23-NOV-05 - Work Continues for Nova Scotia to Host 2011 Canada Games - Four groups are continuing to prepare to bid to host the 2011 Canada Winter Games in Nova Scotia.
The bid groups in the Highland region, central Nova Scotia, the Annapolis Valley and Halifax anticipated that the formal bid process for identifying a host community would begin this fall, with the host announced in the spring of 2006. Those timelines have changed and were communicated to the bid committees on Nov. 15.
The reason for the delay is that federal/provincial/territorial ministers responsible for physical activity, sport and recreation must review and approve a new financial framework that outlines operating and capital costs contributed by governments. The new framework is expected to be approved at their annual meeting in June 2006...

17-NOV-05 - Draft School Food and Nutrition Policy Discussed - The majority of Nova Scotians who responded to the province's draft food and nutrition policy agree steps must be taken to provide better nutritional choices for students in schools.
The draft policy, which recommends removing unhealthy food choices from vending machines and cafeterias, underwent a five-week consultation between Sept. 15 and Oct. 21. 14-NOV-05 - Province Buys Coastline Property - More coastal land will be preserved for the enjoyment of Nova Scotians and tourists in the future thanks to the province's purchase of about 30 hectares (74 acres) of property at Cape George, Antigonish Co.
The $585,000 property, which borders St. Georges Bay, is bounded to the south by Cape George Point Park and is adjacent to the Cape George Lighthouse -- a prominent tourist attraction.

14-NOV-05 - Christmas Tree Ready for Boston - It's a 34-year-old tradition rooted in Nova Scotia's appreciation to its neighbours. Each Christmas since 1971, Nova Scotia has presented a giant evergreen tree to the people of Boston in appreciation for the emergency assistance they provided to our region following the Halifax Explosion in 1917.
This year, the tree is a 14.6-metre (48-foot) white spruce provided by Donald and Annette Hatt of Beech Hill, Lunenburg Co.
At an event that will be attended by about 100 children from Gold River Elementary and Chester Middle schools, the tree is being felled today, Nov. 15, by Nova Scotia Power, and secured to a truck by forestry students of the Nova Scotia Community College (Bridgewater campus)...

14-NOV-05 - Tourism Remains A Billion-Dollar Business - Tourism in Nova Scotia remains a billion-dollar-plus business, employing more than 33,000 people despite a number of challenges.
"The 2006 tourism plan for the province will focus on such things as improving transportation links to the province and continuing to improve and develop our major tourism attractions while creating new experiences," said Rodney MacDonald, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Heritage. 14-NOV-05 - Province Helping Deck the Trees With LEDs - The province is helping 18 municipalities deck their trees with light emitting diode (LED) holiday lights to show Nova Scotians how they can save energy costs this holiday season.
"Nova Scotians can make smart choices to cut their holiday lighting bills by as much as 90 per cent simply by converting to LEDs," said Energy Minister Cecil Clarke. "We're partnering with these municipalities to help demonstrate the energy efficiency, the cost savings, and the practicality of LEDs to Nova Scotians."
Under the agreement, the Department of Energy is investing $21,500 to pay half the conversion costs for energy efficient, LED holiday lights in each of the 18 municipalities. Mr. Clarke said that, although the lights are more expensive to purchase than traditional incandescent lights, the municipalities will benefit because the lights quickly pay for themselves through energy savings...

9-NOV-05 - Keep the Heat Applications Now Available - Low-income Nova Scotians may now apply for assistance under the province's Keep the Heat program.
More than 25,000 application packages have been sent to recipients of last year's program, and others who feel they may be eligible are encouraged to apply, said Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations Minister Barry Barnet.
Keep the Heat offers a cash rebate of $250 for eligible applicants who heat their homes with oil or propane. For those who heat with electricity, wood, coal, wood pellets or natural gas, a $100 rebate is available...

1-NOV-05 - Off-highway Vehicle Act Changes Proposed - The government has introduced legislation to further restrict the use of off-highway vehicles and help safeguard Nova Scotians.
The restrictions are consistent with the recommendations of the Voluntary Planning Task Force on Off-highway Vehicles in that they allow 14- and 15-year-olds to operate an off-highway vehicle only if:
-- they are directly supervised by (in the company of, and within the sight of) a parent or guardian at all times while operating the vehicle;
-- they and their parent or guardian have successfully completed off-highway vehicle safety training ordered by the regulations...
