28-FEB-06 - Jost Vineyards: A Taste of Success - When you think of the great wine-making regions in Canada, what comes to mind? The Niagara Peninsula? The Okanagan?
Hans Christian Jost believes that one day, in the very near future, Nova Scotia will be added to that list. His family's winery, Jost Vineyards, is already making that a reality.
Jost's 1999 Vidal Icewine was named Canada's wine of the year at the All-Canadian Wine Championship held in Ontario in 2000. That's the first time in the 20-year history of this prestigious competition that a winery outside of Ontario or British Columbia has taken first place. Hans Christian believes it won't be the last...

22-FEB-06 - Sanctuary Review Released - Nova Scotians want more wildlife management areas and improved habitat protection in the currently designated areas, a report by the Department of Natural Resources shows.
Public input was sought as part of a review of the province's existing 26 sanctuaries and wildlife management areas to help determine which areas should be maintained, have boundary changes, be reviewed or eliminated.
"I was impressed by the genuine concern that people had in ensuring that our wildlife resources are properly protected," said Natural Resources Minister Richard Hurlburt. "As a result of these concerns, I can confirm my earlier statements that none of the existing areas would be de-listed. I can also confirm that the major prohibitions for hunting and trapping will also be maintained."...

13-FEB-06 - Painting Unveiled at Maritime Museum  - A painting that shows a rare glimpse of an icebound Halifax Harbour is the focus of a new display, entitled A Moment Frozen in Time, that opened today, Feb. 13, at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic.
Painted nearly 150 years ago by a mystery artist known only as Avery, the watercolour depicts the Cunard Line steamer, RMS America, challenging an ice-filled Halifax Harbour.
In the winter of 1859, the city's normally ice-free harbour froze. When RMS America steamed into port on Feb. 14, it made a big impression by successfully smashing through the ice, demonstrating the power and reliability of Cunard's new steam technology...

2-FEB-06 - Road Weight Restrictions On Again Province Wide - Provincial road weight restrictions will be put back in place effective 6 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 4, in all counties throughout Nova Scotia.

1-FEB-06 - Canada-U.S. Delegation Makes Case Against New Border ID Requirement  - Security at the Canada-U.S. border must be carefully guarded, but the economic stability and viability of Eastern Canada and the northeastern U.S. must also be protected, say members of a joint delegation responding to an American proposal for passport-type identification cards.
Nova Scotia House Of Assembly Speaker Murray Scott and Opposition Leader Darrell Dexter are among members of the Canada-U.S. delegation who are in Washington today, Feb. 1, to voice concerns over the U.S. proposal that would require travellers to carry the passport-type ID cards when they cross the Canada-U.S. border.
