Winter Sportfishing Season Opens Jan. 1 - Nova Scotia anglers can
once again head to selected lakes and streams to enjoy some winter fishing
in 2006, including a new season for rainbow trout in Everitts Lake, Digby
Co.
Anglers need a 2005 general fishing licence to fish for chain pickerel,
white and yellow perch, and rainbow trout. The fishing licence is valid
until March 31, 2006. Licenses can be purchased at Department of Natural
Resources offices.
The Bras d'Or Lakes are open for winter angling of rainbow trout from Jan.
1 to March 31. The bag limit is two fish per day. Five areas of the Bras
d'Or Lakes are closed to all angling to protect brook trout and Atlantic
salmon. They include the areas above the Baddeck River Bridge on Highway
105 (including Cains Pond), inside the East Bay sandbar, above Crowdis
Bridge in River Denys Basin, above Black River Bridge in Dundee and above
Mackenzie Brook bridge near the south side of River Denys...

Supports for Nova Scotians with Physical Disabilities - Many
people with physical disabilities will gain more control over the
decisions that affect their daily lives with the Self Managed Care
Program, Health Minister Angus MacIsaac said today, Dec. 19, as he
launched the new program.
"By providing funds directly to Nova Scotians for support services, they
can achieve maximum independence," said Mr. MacIsaac. "The self manager
approach allows clients to oversee the care and supports they require for
daily living."
A similar program, piloted more than 10 years ago, continues to provide
funding to eight of the 10 original clients.
"The success of the pilot and the feedback we have heard from Nova
Scotians through the 2005 continuing care consultations were instrumental
in the development of this program," said Mr. MacIsaac...

Maritime Delegation Participates in WTO Briefings - A Maritime
delegation attending the World Trade Organization talks is meeting daily
to exchange information and assess the international negotiations on
agricultural issues.
The delegation, including Nova Scotia Agriculture and Fisheries Minister,
Chris d'Entremont, New Brunswick Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and
Aquaculture, David Alward and, Prince Edward Island Minister of
Agriculture, Fisheries and Aquaculture, Kevin MacAdam are in Hong Kong to
bring attention to the regional agricultural issues as Canada pursues new
rules for international trade.
"We are taking full advantage of the frequent briefing opportunities set
up for the provinces and industry leaders," said Mr. d'Entremont. "We also
continue to meet with federal ministers Andy Mitchell, Minister of
Agriculture and Jim Peterson, Minister of International Trade, who are

Halifax Wins Canadian Nomination for Commonwealth Games Bid -
Halifax has won the contest to be Canada's choice as host city for the
2014 Commonwealth Games. The selection committee for Commonwealth Games
Canada made the announcement today, Dec. 15, in Toronto.
"This is a great day for Halifax, for Nova Scotia, and the entire Atlantic
region," said Premier John Hamm. "The selection committee clearly realized
what we've known all along: we have a fantastic team behind the bid, great
community spirit and support, and a province that is ideally suited for
such a world-class sporting event."
Halifax beat out three Ontario cities for the Canadian bid: Hamilton,
Ottawa, and York Regional Municipality. Now, Halifax faces competition
from Glasgow, Scotland, and Abuja, Nigeria, to host the Commonwealth
Games. That decision will be made in the fall of 2007 in Sri Lanka...

First Town to Include Land in Wilderness Area - The Town of
Antigonish is the province's first municipality to have some of its land,
including its drinking water supply, designated as part of a protected
wilderness area.
At the town's request, the Department of Environment and Labour has
designated 1,340 hectares of town land in the new Eigg Mountain-James
River Wilderness Area. The designation took effect Friday, Dec. 9.
"The Town of Antigonish is a leader among Nova Scotia municipalities with
its offer to have its own lands protected in a wilderness area," said
Environment and Labour Minister Kerry Morash. "I'm pleased the town has
taken this opportunity to increase protection of its drinking water
supply."
Protection of drinking water sources is part of the multi-barrier approach
adopted through the provincial drinking water strategy -- protect the
source, treat the water, and test to prove it is safe...

Province Sets the Stage for Aging Population - Nova Scotia will be
better prepared to help its seniors enjoy healthy, happy, and productive
lives in the future thanks to the Strategy for Positive Aging in Nova
Scotia released today, Dec. 13.
"The strategy is a comprehensive and important tool that will help us
think ahead and plan better," said Education Minister Jamie Muir, who
released the strategy on behalf of Angus MacIsaac, Minister responsible
for the Seniors' Secretariat. "We cannot, and should not, understate the
value of solid planning today to ensure that, 10, 15 or 20 years down the
road, Nova Scotia is ready and able to help its rapidly growing seniors'
population enjoy a healthy, happy and productive future."
Mr. Muir said Nova Scotia has Canada's second highest percentage of people
aged 65 and older, and that governments at all levels will be increasingly
challenged to sustain, expand and improve services to meet seniors' needs
in the face of growing demands and increased costs...

Province Strengthens Global Partnerships on Climate Change -
Global efforts to reduce climate change may mean new opportunities for
Nova Scotia businesses.
The Department of Energy has signed letters of co-operation with
government representatives from Bolivia and Cuba, and institutional
representatives from Columbia and Belize. The agreements were reached this
week at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Montreal.
"Climate change is a global issue, that will require global solutions,"
said Energy Minister Cecil Clarke. "Nova Scotia businesses and
organizations involved in climate change have the expertise in this field
that will strengthen this shared global effort."
The letters demonstrate Nova Scotia's commitment to international
co-operation on sharing strategies and best practices to help slow the
effects of climate change...

Old Fashioned Christmas A Success - Almost 6,400 visitors to
Sherbrooke Village participated in 2005 Old Fashioned Christmas events --
an increase from last year.
The activities, which traditionally were held over two weekends, took
place over one weekend, Nov. 25 to Nov. 27.
"Opening night was attended by more than 3,300 people and a number of our
musical and craft-related events exceeded our expectations," said Craig
MacDonald, chair of the Old Fashioned Christmas committee. "We were not
sure how people would react to having just the one weekend of activities,
but the overall response was extremely positive."
Attendance increased at the craft sale closing concert, Ceilidh and dinner
dance which was held at Liscombe Lodge...

New Halifax Explosion Records Now Available on Archives' Website -
Nova Scotians can now find newly discovered information about victims of
the 1917 Halifax Explosion online. The Nova Scotia Archives launched the
new online resource, to mark the 88th anniversary of the explosion on
Tuesday, Dec. 6.
"Every year there are fewer survivors left to recall the terrible event,"
said provincial archivist Brian Speirs. "Though we will never know the
exact number of people killed and their identities, this new resource will
provide the most accurate, up-to-date record."...

Lighthouse Beach Restoration Gets Go Ahead - Work will begin
immediately to restore Lighthouse Beach in Pictou County.
The province has received the necessary approvals from the federal
government, allowing the project to proceed. The Nova Scotia Department of
Transportation and Public Works awarded a $1.8-million contract to Alva
Construction Ltd. The contractor expects to be setting up the work site on
Monday, Dec. 5.
The contract will result in the washed-out area of the beach being filled
with large rocks and covering them with sand. In the spring, grasses will
be transplanted on the dune side of the repaired beach...

Past and Future Linked at Boston Tree Lighting - This year's
Christmas tree-lighting in Boston will not only celebrate Nova Scotia's
special history with the people of Massachusetts, it will open new doors
for the future.
Premier John Hamm is leading a delegation in Boston today, Dec. 1, for the
34th annual tree-lighting ceremony and other business.
Every year, the province provides a giant evergreen tree, donated by a
Nova Scotian, to the people of Boston to thank them for their generous
relief assistance after the 1917 Halifax Explosion...
