Beauty, Tranquility & History at the MacPherson House overlooking
Northumberland Strait -As featured in Saltscapes magazine the
MacPherson House built by a Scottish sea captain in 1722 is open and
sunny and sits on two country acres overlooking the harbour of
historical Pictou. It is conveniently located between the town of New
Glasgow and the beautiful Melmerby Beach.
The house has been fully restored with a large modern kitchen and
bathroom as well as main floor bedrooms, laundry, dining-room and
living-room. From the three outside decks you can see sunsets over the
water or the rolling countryside. The house is comfortably furnished
with art and antiques from the Maritimes and boasts the original wood
floors and three massive fireplaces (decorative only).
Featured in the Nov/Dec 2009 issue of Saltscapes magazine, it is of
particular interest to those who appreciate history and nature.
One bedroom has a queen-sized bed and the other has a double. There
is a third bedroom on the second floor however some persons might find
the old ships staircase too steep. For this reason only the main floor
bedrooms are offered. Each one has a large window and closet as well
as dressers and one has a tv. All linens are provided
The kitchen comes fully-equipped with appliances, dinnerware,
cookware, etc It has new, wooden counter tops, a bar area and new
cupboards. One of the original fireplaces is along the wall.
The bathroom has a large, bathtub and shower and a sink made from
one of the original pieces of furniture found in the house. It has
separate ceiling heating and all linens are provided.
In addition to the decks there is a lot of outdoor furniture to
relax on and tables to picnic. The laneway is a comfortable distance
from the road and the front lawn is quite large.

The towns of New Glasgow, Trenton, Stellarton and Westville are minutes
away as well as historic Pictou. Combined they offer enough shops,
restaurants, pubs, etc to keep you busy if you want a change from the
beach. New Glasgow does have a large hospital. Fifteen minutes down a
windy seaside road takes you to Melmbery Beach which is one of the most
beautiful beaches in the province with fairly warm water.
