DEVIL'S OVEN, Clam Harbor Beach

Time: 2 hrs

Length: about 5 km return

Difficulty: 2.5  (some rocks may be slippery)

Location: Take the 107 Highway to Musquodoboit Harbor, then follow Route 7 to lake Charlotte, turn right at the red log store and follow the road to Clam Harbor Beach Provincial Park.  After parking in the parking lot, proceed out to the beach and turn left and walk towards the large rock outcrops at the end of the beach.  In the distance you will see a lighthouse located on Egg Island, several kilometers offshore.  Beyond the first rock outcrops there are several more large rocks extending out into the sea.  These divide the area into several smaller beaches, which are somewhat, secluded and provide good areas for snorkeling and exploring.  A rough trail follows along the back of the beach and leads to a place called Devils Oven.

Description:  The trail is easy to walk but sometimes is indistinguishable as you walk across solid bedrock.  The scenery is quite spectacular and as you approach the large diamond shaped rock sitting awkwardly by itself, you just have to round the bend to find the Devil's Oven.  This is a large hollow carved out of the rocks by constant wave action.  There is an oven-like hole at the head of the gorge.  During times of big sea, the waves rush into this crevice and roar out as if thunder had occurred.  The walk there and back will probably take over 2 hours, as you will want to take time for a swim and enjoy the scenery.
