DAWSON BROOK

Uses: Hiking

Time: 15 minutes

Length: less than 1 km

Difficulty: 3

Location: Along Highway 101, 3.2 km east (towards Halifax) of the Ellershouse Overpass.  Look for a gated road on the south side of the highway.

Description: If you park near the gate, you can walk in along a well-maintained road for about 300 meters or until you see a small bridge crossing the brook.  At the top of the hill, just before the bridge, there is a clearing on the right.  You should be able to find a northward leading trail along the edge of the forest.  The trail is not hard to find at first but after only a minute or so, becomes hard to follow.  By this time though you can just follow along the edge of the brook. It is also possible to walk down to the bottom of the hill and follow the brook for a couple hundred meters to a very pretty waterfall.

The waterfall is located within a steep-sided ravine with high walls of greywacke rock.  The best vantage point for photos is across the river on the southern side of the bank near the top of the cliffs.  There is also a small, but deep swimming hole if you want a quick dip
